Communities of Jrahi Village are known for applying culture in their
daily life, includes during after-birth cares. This research aimed to
describe the cultural practices during after-birth care in Jrahi Village,
Pati Regency. It used ethnographic approach. The informants were
mothers have delivered whose babies aged less than 2 months,
traditional birth attendants, and village midwife. The results showed
that: After-birth cares manifest culture through behavior and
dietary that continued for 35 days after delivery (selapan).
Behaviors applied during after-birth care aimed to protect baby and
mother from supranatural disturbance and to accelerate mother’s
recovery. Traditional birth attendant had significant role to care
mother and baby. Food proscription has been applied for animal
protein, banana, spinach, and spicy or coconut milk-food. Moreover,
mothers also were obligated to consume traditional concoction and
herb. That was a proof that some after-birth practices were
beneficial to mother’s health recovery.
